My motorbikes(Click on the pictures to see more.) In April 1999 I decided to buy a motorbike, after not having ridden one for 13 years! I bought a Suzuki SV650X. After 13 months and 5,902 miles of great fun I decided it was worth spending the money on something with even more power and technology, and I traded the SV in for a Honda X11. Unfortunately, I wrote-off the X11 after only having covered 2,412 miles in 5 months (the summer weather wasn't very good in 2000), so I thought I'd try a complete change of riding style and I bought a cruiser - a Yamaha XVS1100 Drag Star. Click on the images above to see some pictures of the bikes and some specifications.
The changes I made to the SV650 were the fitment of some crashbars, different mirrors, a GiVi windshield, and a Scorpion carbon fibre silencer. I've included some sound recordings of the SV650 with the standard silencer and with the Scorpion silencer so that you can compare the difference and appreciate the glorious sounds that it made!
After 6 months on the Drag Star I decided that the bike I enjoyed the most, and felt the safest on, was the SV650 (and it was also the cheapest!), so I traded in the Drag Star for another SV650. This time I bought a blue 2001 model (SV650K1), which was an import from Italy. I've interspersed some photos of it along with the photos of my previous yellow one for comparison. The changes seem to just be in colour. I've fitted the same type of crashbars, and a Scorpion blue anodised alloy silencer (I just had to have those lovely sounds again!).
Next I bought a Suzuki Burgman 650 - the first motorcycle with an electonically controlled CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) gearbox. The gear ratio is controlled by a computer via an electric motor. Buttons on the left handlebar allow a normal automatic mode, a power mode which uses higher revs for quicker acceleration, and a "manual" mode which allows you to change up and down through five fixed gear ratios, simulating a manual gearbox.
When the SV1000 became available in July 2003 I couldn't resist it, so I traded the Burgman in for a blue SV1000. I then had two Suzuki SVs so I decided to trade in my SV650 for something different, and I bought my first Harley - a Sportster XL883R. I only kept that for 6 months though because I couldn't resist upgrading to the new 2004 model Sportster 1200 Roadster (XL1200R)! I really ought to learn to resist more. :-)
A couple of months later I decide to sell the SV1000 in order to recoup some money and reduce my expenditure, e.g. on tax, insurance and servicing. About the same time I decided to buy a scooter to commute to work on because the traffic is getting worse and it's not much fun driving to work mostly in first gear, so I ended up trading in the SV1000 for a secondhand Yamaha Majesty 250 (plus some money back!).
Another year, another bike! This time I've traded in the Harley for a Buell XB12S Lightning. This is a bit like a cross between a Suzuki SV650 (light and nimble handling) and a Harley 1200 Sportser (similar engine). On paper it sounds like a fun bike, and it has some unique features. I hope I'll like it, and perhaps I'll keep this bike longer than a year - you never know! I only kept the scooter just over a year though and then decided to upgrade it to a new Yamaha Majesty 400.
So much for keeping it more than a year! Exactly a year later I fancied a change again and this time I've bought my first Italian bike - a Moto Guzzi Breva 1100.

Within weeks of buying the Honda X11 I bought a new car too! As it's rather an unusual car (in the UK at least) I thought I'd include a few photos of the car. It's a Smart car, or a MCC Smart (MCC stands for Micro Compact Car). It's a two seater city car fitted with a Mercedes engineered 3 cylinder, 600cc, turbocharged and intercooled engine. They didn't produce a righthand drive version at the time, so it's a lefthand drive car. They started selling righthand drive versions in November 2001, so I then traded mine in for a righthand drive version in January 2002. Click on the above pictures to see some photos, specifications, and links.
After over six years of driving the Smart City Coupe I decided to treat myself to my first ever sports car and I bought a Smart Roadster BRABUS. It has a 700cc version of the Smart engine, tuned by Brabus to produce 101bhp. It's so low that it's difficult to get in and out of but it's fun to drive, and I like its looks.
